What it was Like Working Alongside a Covert Narcissist

Aside from the mold poisoning, the terrorizing was certainly the second most terrible part of my tenure at Mineral County School District. The only reason I withstood being terrorized as long as I did was I fully aware of the personality traits of Hope Blinco. It is my belief that Hope Blinco is a very classic textbook definition of a covert narcissist.

Most people that know Hope Blinco know she is not empathetic, kind, or competent for that matter. The issue with a covert narcissist in Human Resources, is she maintains access to lots of information about a lot of people, that ends up being strategically used. There is no doubt in my mind the reason she twice tried to get me to sign an illegal release to obtain my medical records, was to go on a hunt for any dirt she could find, even if was completely unrelated to my disability.

I can only imagine other people actually gave her that waiver. That waiver is not only intrusive, unwarranted, but actually violated the American with Disabilities Act. When I brought that to her attention, she tried to gaslight me, temporarily relented, and then tried it again.

Another danger of a covert narcissist within a human resource department is they become very sharp at playing people off each other to gain what they want. Manipulating people into picking fights to further her cause at any cost is one of the reasons the atmosphere at Mineral County School District remains so toxic and there is almost no trust between sites, areas, or staffing types.

The thing that Hope hated about me most is I generally live a rather private life. I would never give her more information than was needed. As a result, she had a terrible time trying to manipulate me into doing her bidding. The problem was she never relented. When she couldn’t get me, she sent some flying monkeys my way, then cooked up scheme after scheme that always failed.

At a certain point is was exhausting twirling in and out of rooms like a Roomba so my back was never turned to her or the flying monkeys under her narcissistic spell. It was also clear that nobody was going to do anything about her illegal harassment, despite a binder of letters and substantial proof. I can only imagine the shady Superintendent before the current one had a juicy amount of info in his file that was used as leverage. You see, he became very compliant to her demands and illegal behavior once his background file came in from the staffing agency that recruited him.

The advice that I would give to anyone that must interact with Hope Blinco is treat it like a deposition. I can assure you doesn’t feel any empathy for your situation, she doesn’t care about your situation, it is nothing more than a textbook case of what a narcissist does to build a case for later exploitation.

I would also recommend any meetings with that person are followed up in an email that is printed and retained in your records. For everyone that was told that wasn’t what was discussed, or planned, it was. Narcissistic people documentation, which is why I once had a meeting where both her and the former Superintendent said they didn’t like that I documented everything and followed up with summaries of my conversations.

I was fortunate to escape her wrath without her ever getting even a crumb of information that was available for exploitation. Instead, she was forced to try Wiley Coyote tactics such as the restraining order that failed and a couple other things. In absence of facts, she desperately tries to fabricate alternative facts, but isn’t intelligent enough to even know how to do it. In her mind, she is better and smarter than everyone, therefore, they will never see the anvil above a small pile of birdseed. MEEP MEEP
