I once had a claim with someone that claimed the above. It was a very wild claim to try and process. The person with the renter’s insurance had a whole list of claims about what basement trolls were up to while she slept.
You would think that trolls in the basement in itself would be enough. Oh, no, these were quite active trolls. They would come out of the crawl space, knock over the mop, make spaghetti, and steal one of her gold teeth. I am sure we all wonder how that gets processed as a claim.
So regarding your personal property, only specific things are covered. Theft is covered. Where it starts to get murky is a troll living in the basement. A troll living in your basement could be considered a household resident. Your insurance doesn’t cover people that live there regularly. It is not an easy denial.
I sent an investigator to their household. The investigator was unable to conclude that the trolls were taking anything. What was concluded was the person was not tracking their belongings. The investigator found several of the items. The person had a condition that caused them to think things other than reality.
Your insurance will not cover trolls in your house that takes items and then suspiciously put them back. I even asked this person if they thought about moving. They wouldn’t move because they were determined to catch the trolls. The landlord had even tried to pay them to move as evidence of these trolls. I have no status on this person, beyond they didn’t get a payout because the items were locatable, she was refusing to move, and there was no evidence that trolls were making spaghetti. Wasn’t even a dirty pan when the investigator inspected property,
