It seems every board meeting lately, there are questions about the budget where everything is at. These requests seem to also be going unanswered when it comes to the board. It is rather frightening that they don’t even seem to have a clue what is going on.

I try to give the administrative office some leniency since they recently got a new Finance Manager. With that said, July 1, 20222 is not that new anymore. There is a point where people should start wondering if there are things being hid.

At this point in the school year, the former Superintendent would’ve been told the likely ending balance and the finance manager would be able to compare the budget to the expenses. This time of year is inevitably a precursor to changing the budget in December.

Changing the budget in December requires about 2-5 weeks time depending on who is preparing the revision. It initially seems like there is a lot of time before the end of December, but during this same window Budget Committees need to be held. When I say budget meetings, they should be actual ones.

The public and staff cannot go through another cycle of no information or they don’t need to know that type scenarios. As a public agency, they are required to disclose information like the budget. People should not have to fight to get the information.

When I do records requests, I am always met with stall tactics and unreasonable delays. Most recently when asked about contracts for Diane, I was stalled until it expired so that it was hindsight, not a reflection of what is going on.

The information from the system is easily attainable and should be provided on request. Mineral County School District should consider evaluating whether they are complying with the letter and spirit of the Nevada Open Records Law.
